Data Integration Chosen to Improve IT Security at Canterbury Christ Church University

29 Mar 2010

Data Integration today announced that it has been chosen by Canterbury Christ Church University to deliver and support next-generation firewalls to improve the university’s visibility and control over its network traffic.

The firewalls will provide intrusion prevention and bandwidth control capabilities on a single device with the throughput needed to cope with increasingly mobile users wanting to access a diverse range of applications & services.

After reviewing the products on offer from the established firewall manufacturers, Christ Church favoured the Palo Alto Networks appliance over other big names.

Laura Gallagher, Network Analyst for Christ Church said, “In a university it’s always difficult to strike the right balance between protecting information assets and allowing people the freedom to experiment with new internet resources that can enrich their learning or research experience. Until now we have operated a ‘default deny’ stance to security; only allowing exceptions to this upon request. However, the Threat landscape has changed and in order to protect our stakeholders and allow new applications and services to be delivered, a different approach was required. The ‘per-user, per-application’ level of control in Palo Alto’s appliance means we can allow access to a range of web 2.0-type applications, without compromising security.”

Jon Murphy, Principal Consultant at Data Integration added, “Next-generation firewalls can detect application-specific attacks and combine firewall and IPS functionality with no loss of performance. We are seeing an increasing number of organisations becoming more aware of what next-generation firewalls can do for them and looking for an experienced partner to guide them through not just the setup, but also the change in mindset required to realise the incredible value they can deliver. This is especially true of Higher Education where managing specific threats must be balanced with the freedom required of an academic environment where boundaries must be challenged.”

“Data Integration’s consultative approach, combined with their security expertise and support services meant that their firewall proposal delivered the best value for Christ Church,” concluded Laura Gallagher, Christ Church’s Network Analyst.
