After a competitive tender and proof of concept project, Royal Holloway, University of London chose IT services systems integration specialist, Data Integration, to install a campus-wide, wireless network.
Data Integration, who previously installed a Juniper firewall infrastructure for Royal Holloway, presented Aruba a thin access point technology, as it enables central management of policies and access rather than management of each individual access point. This would give the IT department more control from a security standpoint, but reduce overall management requirement.
According to Dr. Nigel Rata, Head IT Infrastructure Manager, Cutting edge IT, especially connectivity, is vital to attracting students in a highly competitive marketplace. Unlike a traditional business, however, our IT has to go beyond "the office", across a 135 acre campus, to serve around 8,000 Internet-hungry students and staff. In the summer months, the campus is open as a business facility, too. With so much at stake, we wanted a trusted technology partner who we knew would deliver, which is why we chose Data Integration.
The University was on a very tight timeframe, going out to tender in July with a delivery date just two months later when term time recommenced. The University chose to use the NHS PASA framework because it enables shorter procurement timeframes than other frameworks.
Simon Crumplin, CEO at Data Integration said:
Royal Holloway evaluated a number of wireless networking vendors before choosing Aruba as the best technology fit for their requirements. We have recently deployed an Aruba solution at the University of Exeter which was procured through the NHS PASA framework and we were able to extend these terms to Royal Holloway to achieve best value.
As well as the initial installation, configuration, and knowledge transfer, Data Integration is initially providing maintenance and support for the 220 access points, a number that is likely to at least double over the next 12 months.
